A single hyperscale AI data center can consume as much electricity as 100,000 to 400,000 homes, or twice the power of a major city like New Orleans.
To build the necessary power infrastructure, utilities often pass costs onto residents. In regions heavily impacted by data center build-outs, rate increases and power supply concerns have driven up residential electricity costs by nearly 10%.
